Booking a keynote means matching the speaker to your actual outcome. Are you trying to reduce turnover? Build confident managers? Give your team language for handling hard conversations? The right speaker depends on the answer.

Here’s a practical roundup of speakers worth shortlisting if confidence, leadership, and team performance are on your agenda this year.

Mel Robbins

Mel Robbins is a bestselling author. She’s one of the most booked names in motivational speaking right now. Her frameworks like The 5 Second Rule give audiences a simple, repeatable tool for taking action. She’s a strong fit for large general sessions where broad appeal drives registration. Her fee sits at the top of the market. She works best when name recognition is the priority and budget supports it.

Best for: Large conferences and association meetings that need a headline draw.

Brené Brown

Brené Brown’s research on vulnerability and courage gives audiences permission to lead authentically. It helps them set boundaries and show up as themselves at work. She’s a go-to for large-scale women’s leadership events where the room needs both inspiration and a research foundation.

Best for: Major women’s leadership conferences with marquee budgets.

Amy Cuddy

A social psychologist and author of Presence, Amy Cuddy is known for research on body language and self-perception. Her work shows how both affect confidence in high-stakes moments. Her keynotes give audiences concrete, evidence-based tools to use before a big meeting, negotiation, or interview.

Best for: Leadership-development tracks that want a research-backed presence and confidence message.

Simone Knego

Simone Knego is a USA Today bestselling author and two-time TEDx speaker. She created the REAL Method® (Respect Yourself, Embrace Your Failures, Ask Yourself What You Want, Live Without Limits), a practical framework for building confidence at work. Her keynotes include “More Confidence, Less Turnover” and “Teams That Thrive.” Both speak directly to the connection between employee confidence and retention, performance, and team culture.

What sets her apart from a pure inspiration speaker is the framework. Audiences leave with a structure they can apply the next day, not just a feeling that fades by the parking lot. She’s a strong fit for HR and L&D teams. They want a speaker who understands the business case for confidence, not just the emotional one.

Best for: HR conferences, corporate retention initiatives, and women’s leadership events that want an applied framework alongside the inspiration.

Chris Dyer

A five-time Inc. 5000 CEO and author of The Power of Company Culture, Chris Dyer built organizations with strong gender representation on his leadership team. His 7 Pillars of Amazing Culture framework comes from running a company that won multiple Best Place to Work awards. He’s a credible addition to culture and allyship sessions, especially when paired with a woman headliner.

Best for: Programs that want to pair a women’s leadership message with a candid conversation about organizational culture and advancement.

Sheri Jacobs

Sheri Jacobs is an innovation keynote speaker and four-time bestselling author. Her work centers on how strategic constraints can unlock creativity rather than limit it. Her keynotes blend original research with practitioner experience. That makes her a strong value pick for conferences and association meetings that want a research-backed framework without a marquee fee.

Best for: Association meetings, leadership offsites, and innovation summits with a defined budget.

How to choose

Name recognition drives registration. Applied frameworks drive what people actually do differently when they get back to their desks. The strongest confidence and leadership keynote speakers combine a recognizable message with a teachable framework people can actually use. They’re a speaker the room is excited to see, paired with content specific enough to outlast the event itself.

Before you book, ask each speaker the same three questions. What’s the one thing my audience will remember in six months? Can you tailor this to our specific industry and challenge? What does the room actually do differently on Monday morning?

If confidence and retention are the priority for your event, get in touch with Simone Knego to talk through your audience and goals.

Every company says they want innovative employees. Almost none of them have built a culture where it’s actually safe to be wrong.

That gap is costing more than morale. According to PwC’s Global Workforce Hopes and Fears Survey, only 56% of workers feel it’s safe to try new approaches at work, and just 54% say their team treats failures as opportunities to learn and improve. The same research found employees with the highest levels of psychological safety are 72% more motivated than those with the least.

So here’s the leadership development gap nobody’s talking about: companies will spend big on communication training, time management workshops, and DEI seminars. Almost none of them teach leaders how to fail in front of their teams, talk about it, and turn it into something useful. That’s not a soft skill. It’s the skill that determines whether your best people speak up or stay quiet, whether they take the smart risk or play it safe, and whether they stick around long enough to become your next generation of leaders.

The Data Behind the Silence

Fear of failure isn’t a personality quirk. It’s a measurable, costly pattern showing up across the workforce right now.

A 2026 study from INTOO and The Harris Poll found 74% of U.S. employees say innovation is part of their job, yet 41% worry a single mistake could cost them their job.

Research from Nyenrode Business University and IE University found that more than 40% of employees experience fear of failure between 20-40% of the time or more, and nearly half believe they’d perform better at work if that fear weren’t there.

Organizations with high psychological safety see a meaningful boost in innovation and a notable drop in turnover, while teams without it watch their best ideas stay unspoken.

Put those together and the picture is clear: your team has ideas. They’re just not bringing them to you, because somewhere along the way, they learned that being wrong costs more than staying quiet costs.

Why “Fail Fast” Culture Talk Doesn’t Fix This

Plenty of companies have a poster in the break room about embracing failure. Posters don’t change behavior. Leaders do.

Employees don’t calibrate their risk-taking based on what’s written in the values deck. They calibrate it based on what happened the last time someone on their team got something wrong. Did their manager use it as a teaching moment? Or did it quietly show up in their next performance review?

This is where leadership development almost always misses the mark. We train leaders to give feedback, to coach, to delegate. We rarely train them to model failure themselves, out loud, in front of their team, without spinning it into a humble-brag about how it all worked out in the end.

Picture two managers who both miss a deadline because they misjudged the timeline on a project. The first calls a quick team huddle, says plainly what they got wrong in their planning, and asks the team what they’d flag earlier next time. The second quietly absorbs the blame, fixes it themselves, and never mentions it again.

Six months later, those two teams look completely different. The first manager’s team brings them problems early, because they’ve watched what happens when something goes sideways: it gets named, fixed, and moved past. The second manager’s team has learned the opposite lesson, that mistakes disappear quietly or they don’t happen at all, which means problems surface later and bigger, usually right before a deadline instead of three weeks ahead of one.

Same mistake. Same outcome on the project itself. Completely different effect on how the team behaves going forward.

What Embracing Failure as a Leadership Tool Actually Looks Like

This isn’t about throwing out accountability or pretending mistakes don’t matter. It’s about building the muscle to respond to failure in a way that makes your team braver, not smaller.

1. Leaders narrate their own missteps in real time. Not the polished, years-later version with a tidy lesson attached. The actual moment: what they got wrong, what they noticed, what they’re adjusting. When a leader does this consistently, it gives everyone else permission to do the same.

2. Mistakes get separated from identity. The difference between “I failed” and “I am a failure” is the entire difference between a team that takes smart risks and a team that plays defense all day. Leaders set that tone, whether they mean to or not.

3. The first conversation after a mistake is about learning, not blame. Save the performance conversation for patterns, not single moments. If the first question after something goes wrong is “what happened” instead of “whose fault is this,” people stay engaged instead of going quiet.

4. Recovery becomes part of the story, not something to bury. Teams that watch a leader recover from a real setback learn more about resilience than any training module could teach them.

This is the foundation of the REAL Method®, where embracing your failures isn’t a footnote, it’s one of the four pillars of building real, lasting confidence at work.

What This Actually Costs You in Turnover

The clearest business case for embracing failure shows up in retention numbers, not just innovation metrics.

Organizations that prioritize psychological safety, the same trust that lets people admit mistakes without fear, see meaningfully lower turnover alongside their innovation gains. PwC’s research found that 22% of employees say they’ve left a company specifically because of trust issues with leadership, and 61% say a perceived lack of trust directly impacts their ability to do their job well. For teams that include women, employees of color, people with disabilities, or LGBTQ+ employees, the retention impact of psychological safety is even more pronounced, with some research showing retention rates increase by four to six times when that safety is present.

Run the math on what that means for a mid-sized team. If even a handful of your strongest people are quietly disengaging because they’re managing the fear of getting something wrong rather than focusing on the work itself, you’re not just losing ideas. You’re losing the people who had them, usually to a competitor who figured this out first.

The Business Case Is Already in the Numbers

This isn’t a feel-good argument. It’s a retention and innovation argument. SHRM’s State of the Workplace research shows leadership and manager development has been the top CHRO priority for two years running, and the organizations getting it right are seeing it show up in productivity and innovation metrics, not just engagement surveys.

If your leadership development strategy doesn’t include how leaders handle their own failure, you’re building confident-sounding leaders who quietly teach their teams to play it safe. And in a market where innovation is the job description for nearly three out of four employees, playing it safe is its own kind of risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is failure considered a leadership development tool? Because how a leader responds to their own mistakes, not just their team’s, sets the standard for how much risk people are willing to take. Leadership development that skips this teaches confidence on the surface while teaching caution underneath it.

What’s the difference between psychological safety and just being lenient on mistakes? Psychological safety means people trust that raising a problem or admitting an error will be met with problem-solving, not punishment. It has nothing to do with lowering standards. Teams with high psychological safety still hold a high bar; they just get there faster because people speak up before small issues become big ones.

How do you build a culture that embraces failure without losing accountability? Separate the conversation about what happened from the conversation about patterns. A single mistake is a learning moment. A repeated mistake, after support and clarity were already given, is a performance conversation. Conflating the two is what makes leaders either too harsh on one-off errors or too soft on real patterns.

What’s a simple first step for a leader who wants to try this? Talk about one of your own recent mistakes with your team before asking them to talk about theirs. Leaders who go first see the fastest shift in how openly their team communicates.

Have you ever held yourself back because you were waiting for someone else to join you?

In this episode of Her Unshakeable Confidence, Simone and Olivia Knego discuss Olivia’s summer adventure of moving to a new city, living alone for the first time, and stepping into her dream internship. Together, they explore the confidence that comes from trying new experiences, embracing independence, and taking action instead of waiting for the perfect moment. Through honest conversations about self-discovery, personal growth, and navigating unfamiliar situations, they share why some of life’s greatest opportunities come when you’re willing to step outside your comfort zone.

Actionable Takeaways

• Stop waiting for others to do the things you want to experience.
• Take action even when you’re uncomfortable or uncertain.
• Use new experiences as opportunities to learn more about yourself.
• Treat yourself with the same respect and care you expect from others.
• Explore new places, ideas, and opportunities with curiosity.
• Remember that confidence is built through action, not waiting.

I just became a grandma for the first time.

He’s going to call me Mona one day.

For now I’m just getting used to being someone’s grandma at all, and I love every second of it.

But the part that’s stuck with me most isn’t about me.

It’s watching my son and daughter in law step into parenthood and figure it out together.

Day by day, decision by decision, they’re doing an amazing job.

They had nine months to prepare. They read the books, took the classes, set up the nursery, asked the right questions ahead of time. You can tell.

But preparation only gets you to the door.

The real test starts the moment he’s actually here. That’s where I’ve watched their confidence show up.

They trust their gut, they ask for help when they need it, they adjust on the fly when the plan meets real life at three in the morning.

Most people just don’t call that confidence when it shows up in a nursery instead of a boardroom.

I’ve spent years on stages talking about what confidence looks like in leadership. Frameworks, slides, stories about boardrooms and big career moments.

Now I’m watching the same thing play out in their house with a newborn.

Preparation gives you a foundation.

Confidence comes from what you do once you’re standing on it.

A few things I keep coming back to as I watch them:

Preparation and confidence aren’t the same skill.

They read up, took the classes, did the research. They still spent the first week home figuring out things no book covers.

What time he actually wants to eat versus what the schedule says. How he likes to be held when he’s fussy. Which cry means hungry and which one means something else entirely.

None of that comes from a book. It comes from paying attention and adjusting in real time, which is exactly what they’ve done.

I’m learning from them.

I raised six kids and figured I’d seen most of it. I haven’t.

They communicate differently than I did, they divide the work differently, no rigid roles, just whoever has the bandwidth in that moment. They ask for help without the guilt I used to carry, the guilt that told me asking for help meant I wasn’t doing enough.

Leading well sometimes means watching the people coming up behind you and taking notes instead of giving them.

Confidence sounds like steadiness, not certainty.

No panic. No second guessing every decision out loud in front of each other. Just two people moving through something hard, together, dividing up the 2 a.m. feedings and the diaper changes without keeping score.

That’s the same thing I describe on stages when I talk about leadership under pressure.

Confidence isn’t having the answer. It’s making the call anyway, and trusting you’ll adjust if you need to.

This is their thing. I’m just here to help when needed.

I don’t feel any pull to take over, because it’s not mine to take over.

I have thirty plus years of parenting instincts telling me how I’d swaddle him, how I’d handle the crying, what worked for my six. Honestly, I wouldn’t do it any differently.

What matters is letting them build their own rhythm as parents, in their own way, without me weighing in unless they ask.

It’s the same thing I talk about with leaders at work. People do their best work when you let them do their own thing without judgment, when you trust them enough to figure out their own approach instead of handing them yours.

We’re quick to tell people what they should be doing when we don’t actually know the full situation they’re living in. Their day, their baby, their marriage, their exhaustion level at 3 a.m.

I only see a slice of it. That’s not enough information to start handing out advice nobody asked for.

Watching them has been one of the proudest moments of my life.

It’s gone pretty smoothly, honestly, and what gets me is how calm they are through all of it. Even the lack of sleep doesn’t rattle them, because they know that’s just part of it.

No drama, no complaining, just two people enjoying this season for exactly what it is.

That’s exactly what confidence looks like when nobody’s watching and there’s no stage lights involved.

This is the confidence I want more people to see modeled. Real preparation, paired with the steadiness to handle whatever the plan didn’t cover.

It’s the same thing I see in people right before they walk into a leadership role for the first time, step on a stage for the first time, or take a seat at a table they weren’t sure they belonged at.

They’ve done the prep work. They’ve read the reports, rehearsed the pitch, studied the data. And then the real moment arrives, and the prep work only gets them to the door.

What happens next is the same thing happening in my son’s house right now.

Trust your gut. Ask for help. Adjust in real time. Keep showing up.

You don’t need every answer before you start.

You need the willingness to stay steady while you figure out the rest.

That’s true whether you’re walking into a boardroom or walking into parenthood for the very first time.

Proud Mona over here!

Have you ever felt like something was wrong, even when everyone kept telling you that you were fine?

In this honest and inspiring episode of Her Unshakeable Confidence, Simone shares her recent hysterectomy, the discovery of a chronic infection that had impacted her health for years, and the relief of finally getting answers. Together, Simone and Olivia discuss the importance of listening to your body, advocating for yourself, seeking second opinions, and refusing to ignore symptoms that don’t feel right.

Through humor, vulnerability, and personal experience, this episode serves as a powerful reminder that you know your body best, and finding the right answer can change everything.

Ask any HR leader what they want most from their teams, and resilience is almost always on the list. The ability to absorb change, stay steady under pressure, and keep moving forward when things get hard. It sounds simple. But if you’ve ever tried to build it intentionally inside an organization, you know it’s anything but.

I didn’t learn about resilience in a boardroom. I learned it standing over a stove with my daughter Mili strapped to my back.

The First Weeks Home

We adopted our daughter, Mili, from Ethiopia when she was two years old. When Mili first came home, she couldn’t bear to be away from me. Not for a moment. Every time I cooked, she had to be in a carrier on my back. When we went to sleep, she slept on top of me. Not beside me. On me. For about a month, that was our normal.

The next month, we moved her to a pack and play right next to our bed. She could still see me. She knew I was there. From there, she transitioned into our oldest daughter’s room, sleeping in a pack and play beside her sister, still in sight of someone safe. And then finally, when she was ready, she moved into her own room.

Today, Mili is probably the best sleeper in our entire family.

What This Has to Do With Your Team

We didn’t get there with one big dramatic breakthrough. There was no single moment where everything shifted. It was small steps, done consistently, with patience and intention. We stayed steady, we didn’t rush her to where we wanted her to be. We met her where she was and built from there.

That is exactly how resilience works inside organizations.

HR and people leaders spend a lot of energy looking for the big intervention. The keynote that shifts culture. The offsite that realigns the team. The training that finally gets people to think differently. And those things can matter. But real resilience doesn’t come from a single exclamation point. It comes from what you do a little bit at a time, over and over again, without giving up.

Three Lessons That Transfer Directly to the Workplace

1. Meet people where they are, not where you want them to be.

Mili didn’t need to sleep in her own room on day one. She needed proximity, safety, and time. Employees going through change, new managers finding their footing, or teams navigating uncertainty need the same. Pushing people past their current capacity doesn’t build resilience. It erodes trust. Start where they are and build from there.

2. Consistency builds more confidence than intensity.

Every night, Mili knew I’d be there. That predictability is what gave her the safety to take the next small step forward. Your team needs the same kind of consistency from leadership. Regular check-ins, clear expectations, and steady communication do more for team resilience than any single high-energy initiative.

3. Stay with it even when progress is invisible.

There were weeks with Mili where nothing seemed to be shifting. We hadn’t moved yet. But something was happening underneath the surface. Teams in the middle of a difficult transition look exactly the same way. The growth isn’t always visible in the short term. The leaders who stay steady during that invisible phase are the ones who eventually see the breakthrough.

Resilience Is a Practice, Not a Program

One of the biggest mistakes organizations make is treating resilience like a one-time training event. You can’t build it in a workshop. You build it through the everyday decisions leaders make: how they respond to setbacks, how they communicate during uncertainty, how they model recovery instead of perfection.

If you want a resilient team, start by asking: are we creating conditions where people feel safe enough to take the next small step? Are we staying consistent even when it’s hard? Are we measuring progress in inches instead of miles?

Mili needed presence, patience, and a path forward that didn’t overwhelm her. Your team needs you to show up, stay steady, and trust the process.

The best sleeper in our house got there one small step at a time. Your most resilient team will too.

Have you ever stopped yourself from doing something because you didn’t want to do it alone?

In this episode of Her Unshakeable Confidence, Simone and Olivia Knego explore the confidence that comes from learning to enjoy your own company. From solo dinners and traveling alone to striking up conversations with strangers, they share personal stories about stepping outside your comfort zone and discovering unexpected connections along the way.

Together, they discuss why being comfortable alone can actually strengthen your confidence, independence, and ability to connect more deeply with others.

Go do something by yourself, even if it feels uncomfortable at first.

Start small by taking yourself out to a meal or coffee alone.

Stop worrying about being judged. Most people are focused on themselves.

View alone time as an opportunity instead of something to fear.

Be your own best friend and create your own fun.

(And What to Do Instead)

By Simone Knego | simoneknego.com

Every year, companies spend billions on team building. Ropes courses. Escape rooms. Catered offsites. And every year, leaders walk back into Monday wondering why nothing actually changed.

Here’s the truth nobody wants to say out loud: most team building doesn’t work. Not because the activities are bad. But because they’re treating the symptom instead of the cause.

The real problem? Teams can’t step up when they don’t feel safe to. And they won’t feel safe until the leader does something first.

So What Does Psychological Safety Actually Mean?

Before we get into the numbers, let’s define it. Because “psychological safety” sounds like corporate jargon, and it’s not.

Psychological safety is just a fancy way of saying people feel safe to speak up. Safe to ask a question without feeling stupid, safe to disagree without getting shut down. Safe to try something new without being afraid of what happens if it doesn’t work.

It’s not about being coddled or never having hard conversations. It’s actually the opposite. Teams with psychological safety have more honest conversations, not fewer. They surface problems faster, they innovate more. They don’t waste energy protecting themselves.

Think about a time you were on a team and had an idea but didn’t say it. Maybe the room didn’t feel safe for it. That’s what’s missing. And when that happens across an entire organization, the cost is enormous. Missed ideas. Slow decisions. People who check out quietly while still showing up.

The Data Tells the Story

Let’s look at what’s actually happening in workplaces right now.

Only 26% of leaders are creating psychologically safe environments for their teams. (McKinsey)

61% of employees say a perceived lack of trust from leadership directly impacts their ability to do their jobs. (PwC, 2024 Trust Survey)

22% of employees have left a company specifically because of trust issues. (PwC, 2024 Trust Survey)

Only 30% of U.S. employees believe their opinions matter at work. (Gallup)

Read that again. Nearly three in four leaders are not creating the conditions their teams need to perform. And yet they’re booking team building retreats and wondering why engagement is still flat.

It’s not just a team problem. It’s a leadership problem. And the good news is, it’s a solvable one.

What’s Actually Trending in Team Building Right Now

Companies are pouring real attention into this. 2026 research from Outback Team Building shows that the top priority is rebuilding genuine collaboration, not just scheduling activities. Leaders want their people to actually connect, not just co-exist in the same Zoom room.

And industry data shows that companies are shifting from frequent one-off events toward fewer, higher-impact experiences. They’re spending more per person and expecting more in return.

That’s progress. But here’s where most organizations still get it wrong: they’re investing in the experience without investing in the environment. And without the right environment, even the best team building moment fades by Wednesday morning.

Why Team Building Fails

Here’s a scenario that might sound familiar.

A leader implements every best practice. Clear KPIs. Regular one-on-ones. Team building retreats. But the team still feels fragmented. Disconnected. Like they’re all rowing in different directions.

Why? Because the leader never once admitted to struggling with anything. The team didn’t trust her because she didn’t seem human.

That’s the real gap. Google’s landmark Project Aristotle study looked at nearly 200 teams over five years and found that the number one factor separating good teams from great ones wasn’t talent, strategy, or structure. It was psychological safety. The ability for team members to take risks, ask questions, admit mistakes, and disagree without fear.

You can’t manufacture that with a trust fall. You build it by showing up differently as a leader.

The Leader Has to Go First

This is what I talk about in my keynote, Teams That Move. Real team performance doesn’t start with a better activity. It starts with a leader who gives their people permission to fully show up.

There’s a leadership shift happening right now that the best organizations are paying attention to. Research published in 2026 puts it this way: the most effective leaders have moved from being the hero to being the guide. They create clarity without claiming certainty. They hold space for hard conversations without rushing to fix everything.

That requires a different kind of confidence. Not the kind that has all the answers. The kind that says, “I don’t know, and that’s okay” without losing credibility. The kind that lets others shine.

When leaders show up that way, teams follow. When they don’t, no amount of ropes courses will close the gap.

What This Looks Like in Practice

So what does it actually mean to lead differently? Here are three shifts that move teams from stuck to stepping up.

1. Drop the Qualifiers

The language you use as a leader shapes the culture around you. When you preface ideas with “this is just a thought” or “I’m probably wrong, but” you signal to your team that uncertainty is something to hide. It isn’t. I call this Drop the Just. The words we minimize ourselves with teach others to minimize themselves too. Stop doing it. Say what you mean with confidence, even when you’re still figuring it out.

2. Normalize Failure Out Loud

Teams only take risks when they believe it’s safe to fail. And they only believe that when they see the leader fail first, and survive it. Share your own missteps. Talk about what you tried, what didn’t work, and what you learned. Not as a vulnerability performance, but as genuine leadership modeling. The REAL Method is built on this principle: Embrace Your Failures. It’s the E in REAL, and it’s the one leaders most consistently skip.

3. Ask, Then Listen

One of the simplest and most underused leadership tools is asking your team what they actually need. Not in a survey that gets filed away. In a real conversation where you take notes and then do something about it. Gallup research consistently shows that teams perform better when people feel involved, connected, and aligned. That doesn’t happen through activities. It happens through genuine dialogue.

The Real Competitive Edge

Here’s what the data makes clear: confidence isn’t soft. It’s operational.

When leaders build cultures where people feel seen, trusted, and empowered to act, the results show up in the numbers. Workplace wellbeing research going into 2026 shows that teams in high-trust environments see compounding benefits over time. Better communication. Softer silos. Stronger collaboration. People who stay.

That’s not a nice-to-have. That’s a retention and performance strategy.

The companies winning right now aren’t the ones with the best team building budget. They’re the ones with leaders who’ve done the inner work to show up with real confidence, and created space for their teams to do the same.

Where to Start

If you’re a leader who wants a team that actually moves, here’s your honest starting point:

• Look at your own language. Are you qualifying, hedging, and minimizing? Drop it.

• Ask yourself what you’re modeling. If your team isn’t taking risks, ask whether they’ve ever seen you take one.

• Stop waiting for the right activity. Start with the right conversation.

Team building isn’t a destination. It’s a daily practice. And it starts with you.

Your team is capable. You know it. They probably know it too. So why won’t things move?

If you’re trying to figure out how to lead a stuck team, the answer almost never is what you expect.

When a team gets stuck, the instinct is usually to push harder. More meetings, more accountability, more pressure. And sometimes that works. But more often than not, it makes things worse, because the real problem isn’t effort. It’s confidence.

Not confidence in the leader. Confidence in the team itself.

And research keeps pointing to the same surprise: one of the biggest gaps in team performance isn’t talent or resources. It’s whether people feel safe and confident enough to actually use what they’ve got. Gallup research shows that disengaged employees are costing the global economy $8.8 trillion in lost productivity, and that engaged employees are 18% more productive and 23% more profitable than their disengaged counterparts. The gap isn’t a skills problem. It’s a confidence and connection problem.

They get curious before they get directive.

The first thing great leaders do differently when their team is stuck is they ask before they tell. Not a performative “does anyone have questions?” at the end of a meeting, but a real, genuine investigation. What’s actually getting in the way? Is it unclear direction? Competing priorities? Fear of making the wrong call?

I was working with a leader once, a VP at a mid-sized company, who came to me completely frustrated. Her team had been stalling on a major initiative for weeks. She had already tried more structure, more check-ins, more deadlines. Nothing was moving. When I encouraged her to sit down with her team and simply ask what they were experiencing, the answer surprised her. They weren’t confused about the work. They were terrified of recommending the wrong direction to senior leadership and being blamed for it. Nobody had said it out loud until she made it safe enough to.

That one conversation unlocked weeks of stuck.

When you lead with curiosity, you send a message: your perspective matters here. That alone can shift the energy in a room.

They address the self-doubt they can’t see.

This is the one most leaders miss when they’re trying to figure out how to lead a stuck team. When a team stalls, there’s almost always an invisible layer of self-doubt underneath. Someone doesn’t think their idea is good enough to say out loud. Someone’s been burned before and isn’t about to take that risk again. Someone’s waiting for more certainty before they’ll commit.

Google’s Project Aristotle studied 180 teams over two years to figure out what made some more effective than others. The research found that psychological safety, the belief that you can speak up without fear of punishment or embarrassment, was the single most important factor for team success. Not talent, not strategy, not resources. Safety.

Great leaders know how to name the thing nobody’s naming. Sometimes it sounds like, “I wonder if part of what’s happening is that we’re afraid to get this wrong.” Just saying it out loud creates permission. It tells the team that doubt is allowed here, and that we can move forward anyway.

They make it safe to be imperfect.

Stuck teams are often perfection-paralyzed teams. They’re waiting for the perfect plan, the perfect moment, the perfect amount of information. Teams with high psychological safety are six times more likely to tackle complex problems effectively, because they feel free to share bold ideas, question outdated processes, and propose improvements. The difference is that they’ve been given permission to be wrong on the way to being right.

I think about my own kids when I talk about this. When one of them was learning to drive, every mistake felt catastrophic to them. Every wrong turn, every too-wide lane change. And I noticed that the more I reacted to each small error, the more frozen they became behind the wheel. But when I stayed calm, when I said, “that’s okay, here’s what we’ll do differently,” something changed. They started driving with more confidence, not less caution. They needed to know that imperfect attempts were still welcome.

That’s exactly what great leaders do for their teams.

They reconnect people to the why.

Stuck often comes with a side of disconnection. People get lost in the weeds of how and forget why. PwC’s Global Workforce research found that workers who feel supported in their growth and development are 73% more motivated than those who feel least supported. Purpose and investment go hand in hand. When people feel like their leader believes in them, and when they remember why their work matters, they find the energy to push through the stuck.

Great leaders regularly bring the team back to the bigger picture, not as a motivational speech, but as a genuine reminder: this is what we’re building, this is who it serves, this is why it matters.

They remove the obstacles, not just the excuses.

This one matters more than people realize when you’re learning how to lead a stuck team. Sometimes teams are stuck because of real, structural barriers. Unclear decision-making authority. Conflicting priorities from leadership. Resources that were promised and never delivered. Research has found that 68% of employees feel their managers lack a clear understanding of their workloads, which leads to uneven task distribution and, ultimately, stalled momentum.

Great leaders don’t just ask their teams to push through those walls. They go move the walls. That’s the difference between a leader who talks about trust and a leader who builds it. When you consistently clear the path for your team, they start to believe that the path is actually clearable. And that belief is what gets them unstuck.

Here’s the truth: the best leaders I know aren’t the ones who always have the answer. They’re the ones who create conditions where their team feels capable of finding them. That’s what confidence looks like at a leadership level, and it’s what separates the managers who keep their teams spinning from the leaders who help them move.

Your team isn’t stuck because they can’t do the work. They’re stuck because something, somewhere, made them doubt themselves. Your job is to help them remember that they can.
