Are you tired of struggling with self-doubt, second-guessing yourself, and playing small? You’re not alone. For years, I thought the answer was to “just be more confident”—but what I really wanted was to break free from the endless struggle inside my own head. I wanted to stop hiding, stop feeling “not enough,” and finally move forward with a sense of real, lasting peace.

Why So Many Women Struggle With Confidence

Many of us grew up learning to be “nice”—not to disrupt or ask for too much. Then social media added a layer of pressure to look perfect while feeling far from it. We shrink, compare ourselves to others, and doubt our dreams. Most of all, we get tired of struggling with the question: “Will I ever feel like I’m enough?”

Facing the Fear of Being Judged

The real obstacle isn’t a lack of ambition or ability—it’s the fear of being judged or misunderstood. We worry that if we share our real stories—our failures, fears, and doubts—people might see us as less than. So we stay comfortable, but that comfort zone quickly becomes a cage.

What It Feels Like to Play Small

If you’ve ever…

Replayed conversations, second-guessing every word

Silenced your dreams, thinking someone like you “could never do that”

Felt like you are not bold enough, not successful enough, not worthy enough

Watched others take chances while you held back out of fear

…you are not alone. I have been there, too.

The Moment Everything Changed

When I sat down to write my second book, REAL Confidence: A Simple Guide to Go From Unsure to Unshakeable, I made a radical decision: I would not just share my victories, but my real struggles. I’d open up about the moments that felt terrifying to talk about—the times I doubted myself, the days when I wondered if I was “too much” or “not enough.”

I’ll never forget the moment my hands hovered over the keyboard, anxiety swirling in my stomach. Was I really going to tell the world about my hardest moments? What if people judged me? What if they saw the real me and decided I wasn’t worthy?

But I knew that if I wanted to truly serve other women, I had to go first. I had to model what it looks like to step outside my comfort zone, to get uncomfortable, and to own my story—even the messy parts. And what I realized, in the end, was this: sharing my struggles set me free, and it gave other women permission to do the same.

Vulnerability is the birthplace of confidence. When you stop hiding and start sharing, you realize you’re not alone—and neither is anyone else. That’s why I developed a process that every woman can follow if she’s ready to move past self-doubt and into real, unshakeable self-belief.

The REAL Method—How to Live Without Limits

Over time, I discovered four steps that radically changed my relationship with confidence. Here’s how you can start to stop struggling and live without limits:

1.Respect Yourself:

Give yourself the compassion, boundaries, and encouragement you’d offer to a dear friend. Confidence starts with self-respect. For me, that meant saying “no” to things that didn’t align with my values—even when it was uncomfortable. Each time I honored my true self, I noticed my confidence grow.

2. Embrace Your Failures:

Your failures aren’t the end—they’re the foundation for growth. Instead of covering up mistakes, see them as part of your journey. I used to feel ashamed of my failures, but sharing them not only helped me heal, it connected me to countless women who needed to hear that they weren’t alone in their struggles.

3. Ask Yourself What You Want:

Get honest about your dreams. What do you want—not what others expect, but what you really desire? When I gave myself permission to want more, new doors opened. Take a moment to write down what you truly want. Let yourself dream without judgment.

4. Live Without Limits:

Stop telling yourself you’re not enough. Step into discomfort, try new things, and see how far you can go. My favorite mantra became, “I am willing to get uncomfortable for the sake of my dreams.” Every time I said yes to something that scared me, I grew.

What Happens When You Live Without Limits

Everything changes. When you step out of your comfort zone and embrace the REAL Method:

You approach challenges with confidence, not fear

You connect more deeply with others because you’re authentic

You feel lighter, no longer weighed down by perfectionism or shame

You start saying yes to opportunities, even if they scare you

You realize you are already enough—worthy of love, success, and happiness

Why Living Without Limits Matters Right Now

Today, the world is hungry for real stories, genuine leadership, and women who dare to show up fully. When you live without limits, you give others permission to do the same. This is how movements start—one brave voice at a time.

Real Stories, Real Results

Here’s what one reader shared after reading “REAL Confidence”:

“I am so grateful for your candor and authenticity in writing ‘REAL Confidence.’ I am so moved by your sincere communication to women like me… You have expressed so accurately what many of us have felt for decades.”

Another woman told me, “I never thought I’d have the courage to speak up at work, but after reading your story, I decided to share my idea in a meeting. It was scary—but it led to a real breakthrough for our team. Thank you for showing me what’s possible.”

Special Moments to Celebrate

Launching “REAL Confidence” has been filled with amazing moments I’ll never forget—from opening the box to see my book for the first time, to celebrating with friends at book signings, to hitting bestseller lists and seeing readers post their favorite quotes online. Each of these moments is a reminder that stepping out of your comfort zone doesn’t just change your life—it creates a ripple that inspires others.

If you want to be part of this movement, I invite you to join my launch team, attend a live event, or simply share your own journey on social using #REALConfidenceBook.

My Invitation to You

I wrote this book for every woman who’s tired of struggling and playing small. For the woman who dreams of more but feels trapped by fear or self-doubt. If that’s you, I want you to know: you are worthy of respect, you are allowed to embrace your failures, you can ask for what you want, and you deserve to live without limits.

If you’re ready to break free and step into your true potential, now is your time.

I do not make New Year’s resolutions.

I don’t believe in them. They often feel like setting yourself up to fail, simply because so few people actually follow through.

I have nothing against them, but I have learned that January First does not magically make me a different person. If I want to change something, I usually just decide to do it when it feels right, not because the calendar tells me I should.

So this year, Dry January was not my idea.

It was my son’s.

He challenged me to go a full month without drinking alcohol, and honestly, if your kid challenges you like that, you kind of have to do it. It wasn’t dramatic. No long conversation. It was basically, I bet you can’t. And just like that, it became a commitment.

There was also an incentive involved. Or what we thought was an incentive.

He said that if my husband and I didn’t drink alcohol for the entire month, he would come home for my book launch party. That sounded appealing until we actually thought about it. The party is in the middle of the week. He would have to miss two full days of college classes. And as we later remembered, this is also midterm week.

So no, that was never actually going to happen.

The whole bet was ridiculous from the start.

He was not skipping midterms to come home for a party, and we all knew it. But in the moment, it felt like a solid enough deal to say yes without thinking it all the way through.

And right after agreeing, I thought, what was I thinking?

The Worst Timing Possible

This is not a quiet January for me.

I have my book launch coming up next month. I am planning three different events. I have multiple speaking engagements on the calendar. My schedule is full, my brain is busy, and yes, there are moments when a glass of wine sounds like a lovely way to wind down.

And that is exactly when I decided, sure, let’s take wine out of the equation completely.

It felt a little backwards. If there was ever a month where it would make sense to say, not now, this would be it.

But here we are.

And honestly, it has not been a bad thing.

What I Noticed During Dry January

I am sleeping better. That’s the headline. The rest is just observations.

The biggest thing I’ve noticed is not about alcohol at all. It’s about how many moments come with an unspoken script. Dinner equals a drink. Couch equals a drink. Going out equals a drink. Not because anyone needs it, but because that’s just how those moments are usually packaged.

Taking wine out of the mix hasn’t felt dramatic. It’s just made those defaults more obvious. Like realizing you always sit in the same seat at a restaurant.

I’ve also been drinking a lot more sparkling water. Not because I’m virtuous. Because I apparently like bubbles and something cold nearby. That’s it.

And no, this hasn’t turned into some personal transformation. I’m the same person. Just slightly better rested and very well hydrated.

Going Out Without Drinking

The other night, I went out with friends. We went to dinner and then to a champagne bar, which felt ironic.

Before we even left, I decided I would be the designated driver. That way, there would be no pressure, no awkwardness, and no internal debate.

And guess what?

I had a great time.

It did not matter that I was not drinking. The conversation was still fun. The laughter was still there. The night was still enjoyable.

I did try a mocktail, which was a mistake. Why do they even make mocktails? Just call it juice. That was not for me.

But sparkling water? Perfectly fine.

The biggest realization was this. The fear of not drinking socially is far bigger than the reality of it.

Are You Going to Quit Drinking Forever?

No.

Let me be very clear about that.

This is not a forever decision. This is not a dramatic lifestyle shift. This is not me declaring that I will never drink again.

What it is doing, though, is making me think.

Especially during the week.

If I sleep better without wine, maybe I do not need it as often as I thought. Maybe it does not need to be the default. Maybe it can be a choice instead of a habit.

That awareness alone feels valuable.

When People Say, “Just Have One”

Here is the part that matters most to me.

People will say, just have a glass of wine. Nobody will know.

And technically, that is true.

Nobody else would know.

But I would.

So much of what I talk about is keeping the promises you make to yourself. That is where confidence actually comes from. Not from hype. Not from motivation. Not from saying the right things.

From trust.

If I say I am going to do something, and then I do it, even when it is inconvenient, that builds self trust.

It does not matter what the promise is.

Making your bed every morning. Going for a walk. Not drinking alcohol for a month. Skipping caffeine. Setting a boundary. Saying no when you mean no.

The action itself might be small, but the message it sends to yourself is huge.

Why This Has Nothing to Do With Alcohol

Not drinking alcohol for a month is actually a bad example in some ways.

I already know I am capable of not drinking alcohol for a month. That is not the point.

The point is what happens internally when you keep a promise to yourself that nobody else is policing.

There is no applause for this. No one is checking in daily. No one is holding me accountable except me.

And that is where confidence grows.

Confidence is not loud. It is not performative. It is quiet and internal. It is built when you do what you said you would do, especially when no one is watching.

Confidence Is Built Through Follow Through

We often think confidence comes from feeling ready.

It does not.

It comes from action.

It comes from following through, even when something feels uncomfortable or unnecessary or mildly annoying.

Every time you keep a promise to yourself, you reinforce the belief that you can trust yourself.

And self trust is the foundation of confidence.

That is what carries you through hard conversations, big decisions, and moments of doubt. Not because you are fearless, but because you know you will show up for yourself.

What Dry January Is Giving Me

This month is giving me awareness.

It is showing me how automatic some habits are, and how little space we leave to question them. It is reinforcing that discomfort does not mean something is wrong. It usually just means something is different.

It is also reminding me that habits do not have to be permanent to be examined. You can try something on without committing to it forever. You can experiment without turning it into an identity shift.

And most importantly, it is reinforcing something I talk about all the time. Confidence grows when your actions align with your words.

Not perfectly. Not dramatically. Just consistently.

That part still holds.

A Gentle Invitation

If this resonates with you, I want to invite you to go a little deeper.

My new book, REAL Confidence, is all about building confidence from the inside out, by keeping promises to yourself, respecting your reflection, and trusting your own voice again.

You can pre order your copy at realconfidencebook.com, and when you do, you will receive all of the pre order bonuses created to support you as you start practicing this work in real life.

Not in theory.

In the everyday moments where confidence is actually built.

One promise at a time.

The Shadow Who Follows Me

Kodi follows me everywhere. If I get up to grab a glass of water, he’s right there. If I walk outside for a minute, he’s at the door waiting. Even if I go to the bathroom, I can hear him get up and follow, because heaven forbid I go anywhere without him.

We adopted Kodi when he was six months old from a rescue in California. I saw his picture online — this beautiful standard poodle with the sweetest face — and that was it. We knew he was the one. A few weeks later, he flew across the country to join our family, and from the moment he arrived, he’s been part of us.

He’s always been patient, kind, and loyal in the quietest way. He has this deep bark that makes him sound tough, but really, he’s cautious when people come into the house. He watches, he waits, he decides if he trusts you.

But outside, he’s full of life. We live on the water, and his favorite thing is when dolphins swim by. He runs up and down the seawall barking at them, and they actually seem to respond, swimming back and forth as if they’re playing his game. It drives me crazy because the whole canal can hear him, but I have to admit — it’s pretty amazing to watch.

And when he’s not chasing dolphins, he’s on lizard patrol. He’ll spend hours darting around the yard, hunting every little movement in the grass. The concentration is intense — nose down, tail wagging, pure joy in motion.

Thirteen years later, he still does it — a little slower now, but with the same excitement.

When Everything Changes

Lately, though, we’ve noticed changes. He’s been losing weight, sleeping more, and I think deep down, we knew something wasn’t right. When our vet came to the house, she did an ultrasound and gently told us what no pet owner ever wants to hear: Kodi has liver cancer. There’s no cure. We’ll manage his comfort and make sure he knows how loved he is.

It’s a sentence that’s hard to even say out loud.

The truth is, when you bring a pet into your life, you know this day will come eventually — but you never really believe it. You focus on the joy, the companionship, the little routines that make up life together. You forget that time is moving, that this creature who has loved you through every high and low won’t be here forever.

Kodi has been through it all with us. He’s been part of every season — the noise, the chaos, the laughter, he’s watched our kids grow up, he’s sat under the kitchen table waiting for dropped crumbs, he’s comforted us when we’ve cried and wagged his tail when we’ve celebrated. He’s woven into every piece of our family story.

And I think that’s the thing about pets: they become part of the rhythm of your life. You feel their presence in everything, and it’s hard to imagine life without it.

The Lessons They Leave Us

Kodi has taught me more about kindness and compassion than most people ever could. He’s patient with everyone — kids, other dogs, even the occasional stranger. He doesn’t rush to judge. He waits, he observes, he loves anyway. There’s something deeply human about that, or maybe something we humans could stand to learn.

He’s also taught me about loyalty — not the dramatic, movie-style loyalty, but the quiet, steady kind. The kind that means being there, every single day, no matter what. That’s what love looks like when it’s uncomplicated.

Every morning, he waits by my feet while I drink my coffee. Every night, he curls up at the foot of our bed. When I move, he moves. When I sit, he sits. He’s not looking for attention or reward; he just wants to be near. There’s a lesson in that kind of presence — in the way he reminds me that love doesn’t have to be loud to be powerful.

I’ve always believed our pets find us for a reason. They come into our lives when we need them most, even if we don’t realize it at the time. Maybe Kodi came to teach me patience. Maybe he came to teach me how to slow down and pay attention. Or maybe he came to prove that everyday love — the kind that greets you at the door and follows you everywhere — is what matters most.

The Gift of Love That Stays

Since his diagnosis, I’ve been watching him more closely. I notice the little things now — the way he lifts his head when he hears my footsteps, or how he still perks up when the dolphins appear. Even on the hard days, he greets the world with curiosity and calm. It’s humbling to watch.

I think about how much animals give us without ever asking for anything in return. They don’t care what kind of day we’ve had, whether we’ve met our goals, or if we’re feeling confident or not. They just want to be near us. To love us. To be part of our lives.

That kind of love is simple. It’s pure. And it changes you.

Over the years, Kodi has shown our family what it means to care for something wholeheartedly. Our kids have learned responsibility through feeding him, empathy through comforting him, and compassion through this hard season we’re in now. He’s taught all of us that love isn’t just about the fun parts — it’s about showing up even when it’s difficult.

I know the day will come when the house feels quieter. When I’ll catch myself listening for those familiar footsteps that aren’t there. And as painful as that will be, I also know that every memory we’ve shared will stay with us: every walk, every wag, every moment by the water.

Because the thing about pets is that their love doesn’t leave when they do. It lingers, it fills the spaces they once occupied. It softens the sharp edges of life. And it reminds us of what really matters—being kind, being loyal, and being present.

When people say, “It’s just a dog,” I always shake my head. There’s no just about it. If you’ve ever loved an animal, you know exactly what I mean. They’re part of the family — not because we treat them that way, but because they are.

Kodi may not have years left, but he has today. He has a family that adores him, a seawall full of dolphins to bark at, and a house where he’ll always be loved. And for now, that’s enough.

I know there will come a time when I’ll have to make the hardest decision — to say goodbye. But that’s not today. Today, he’s still barking at dolphins and chasing lizards, still greeting the world with curiosity and joy. When those things stop, I’ll know it’s time. Until then, I’ll keep soaking up every wag, every nudge, every quiet moment beside him.

If you have a pet, give them an extra hug tonight. Let them know how much they matter. Because one day you’ll look back and realize that in caring for them, they were quietly teaching you how to be a better human.

That’s what Kodi has done for me. And that’s what every pet does — they remind us how to love without conditions, how to show up with our whole hearts, and how to appreciate the simple, beautiful moments that make up a life.

Because they’re not just pets. They’re family.

When’s the last time you had a meal without looking at your phone? Putting your phone away might lead to a real connection with those around you.

It’s a simple question, but one that stayed with me during our recent trip to England and Wales. My husband and I spent a week traveling—first to Birmingham for a friend’s wedding, then through the Cotswolds, on to Bath for some time at the thermal spa, and finally to Cardiff to see our daughter Emma’s new apartment and help her finish moving in.

The week had a little bit of everything: a joyful wedding, villages that looked like they belonged in a painting, trains and Ubers, some really good cider, and plenty of family time. But what I keep coming back to isn’t the views or even the experiences. It’s this: I didn’t check the news once all week. And one night, we decided to put our phones away for the entire dinner.

It sounds so simple. But think about it—when’s the last time you did that?

A Celebration in Birmingham

We started our trip in Birmingham for a wedding. Weddings always carry a certain energy, but being there as guests in another country made it feel even more special. Some of the traditions were different, the accents were different, even the food was a little different. But the joy? That was the same everywhere.

Watching two people start their lives together reminded me that connection is what gives life meaning. We’re often so caught up in our daily routines that we forget how empowering it is to witness love, community, and people showing up for one another. It was the perfect beginning to a week that turned out to be all about presence.

A Different Pace

From Birmingham, we made our way through the Cotswolds. The villages looked like something out of a storybook—stone cottages with ivy climbing the walls, winding streets, and rolling hills that seemed to stretch forever. People lingered in pubs and cafés. Meals weren’t about rushing to finish. They were about conversation, laughter, and letting time stretch out a little longer than you planned.

That pace carried over to Bath, where we stayed for a couple of days. Even in a city filled with history and tourists, there was an ease about it. People didn’t seem in a hurry to move on to the next thing.

I’m not glued to my phone during meals, but I do tend to move quickly—finish one thing so I can get to the next. In England and Wales, the natural rhythm of slowing down reminded me that empowerment isn’t always about pushing forward. Sometimes it’s about pausing, giving yourself permission to enjoy the present, and realizing that not everything needs to be rushed.

Phones Down, Heads Up

The night we put our phones away, dinner felt different. We weren’t half-distracted. We actually talked—real conversation, not just quick check-ins. We laughed about small moments from the day, shared what we’d noticed in the villages, and paid attention to the food in front of us.

Presence doesn’t sound like a big deal, but it is. When you’re fully in a moment, you remind yourself that you don’t have to juggle everything at once. You can be right here. That’s enough.

Knowing My Limitations

Travel always nudges you out of your comfort zone. We hopped between planes and trains, navigated unfamiliar stations, and leaned on Ubers when we needed them. I know my limitations, and driving on the opposite side of the road in a country I don’t know well isn’t something I was going to attempt. Instead of stressing myself out, I chose the option that worked best for us.

That’s part of confidence, too—being honest about what you can handle and making choices that keep you steady and present. Every time we figured something out—whether it was catching the right train, finding the right stop, or even discovering a hidden pub—it felt like a small win. And those little wins stack up.

Rest Matters

One of my favorite stops was Bath, where we spent an afternoon at the thermal spa. The warm waters, the quiet, the history surrounding us—it was unlike anything I’d experienced before. At first, I had that little voice in my head telling me I should be doing something more productive. But then I reminded myself: this is exactly why we came.

Rest isn’t wasted time. It’s knowing your limits, listening to your body, and honoring what it needs. Sitting there without rushing or multitasking, I felt more recharged than I had in months. And that was empowering.

New Flavors, New Conversations

We also sampled some of the best cider I’ve ever had. Sitting in small pubs, slowing down long enough to enjoy a drink, and noticing the atmosphere around us felt like part of the lesson too. It wasn’t about rushing through or checking my phone between sips. It was about being present—tasting, talking, and letting myself enjoy something new.

Watching Emma Step Forward

The highlight of the trip was time with Emma. We helped her finish setting up her apartment in Cardiff—buying the last few things, moving furniture, hanging curtains, making it feel like home.

Seeing her life there reminded me that confidence doesn’t stop growing once you hit a certain age. For Emma, it’s about continuing to build her independence in a new city and making choices that reflect who she is. For me, it’s about recognizing my role has shifted. I don’t need to manage or fix. I get to show up, support, and celebrate the person she’s already become.

There was something powerful in watching her pride as she showed us around and equally powerful in giving myself permission to simply enjoy the moment. Sometimes confidence means stepping back and realizing the people you love are already standing strong.

Kindness Everywhere

Another thing that stood out was how kind people were. Strangers stopped to give us directions, suggested places to eat, or simply struck up conversation. That friendliness made the trip lighter.

It reminded me that confidence isn’t only about standing on your own. Sometimes it’s about knowing your limitations, accepting help, and then passing that kindness forward.

What I Brought Home

The biggest lesson wasn’t how to read a train schedule or which cider was best. It was the reminder that life feels richer when you slow down, when you put your phone away, when you admit you don’t have to do it all.

And here’s the thing: you don’t need to be across the ocean to practice this. You can start at your own dinner table. Try one meal this week without your phone. Notice the food. Notice the people. Notice yourself.

It’s such a small shift, but it changes everything.

One Last Thought

Travel always teaches me more than I expect. This trip gave me castles, countryside, laughter, and cider—but more than that, it reminded me that empowerment isn’t about proving you can do everything. Confidence grows when you know your strengths, recognize your limits, and give yourself permission to simply be present.

So let me ask you again: when’s the last time you ate without looking at your phone? Maybe it’s time to find out.

There are nights when the couch feels like the best option in the world. Blanket. A glass of wine. Netflix. Zero effort. Moments like these challenge my confidence in connection with others. That was me not too long ago. A friend had invited a few couples over to her house, and I had said yes, but when the time came, the last thing I wanted to do was get off that couch.

You know that little back-and-forth that happens in your head? “Do I really need to go? They’ll be fine without me. I’ll catch them next time.” My brain was working overtime, coming up with excuses to stay home.

But here’s what happened. I dragged myself up anyway. I had committed, and deep down I knew it wasn’t just about keeping my word to them. It was about keeping it to myself.

And wouldn’t you know it? I had the best time.

The Power of Just Showing Up

From the second I walked in and saw my friends’ smiles, everything shifted. We laughed. We shared stories. We caught up on life. And I left feeling lighter and happier than when I arrived.

If I had stayed home, I would have missed it. I would have missed that reminder that connection really does fill us up in ways the couch never can.

And I think we’ve all been there, tempted to stay in, convinced we’ll feel better if we just rest. But so often, what we actually need is the exact opposite. We need to get out of our heads and into community.

Why Connection Matters for Confidence

I used to think confidence came from big, impressive moments like standing on a stage, crossing a finish line, or publishing a book. But honestly? Some of the most powerful confidence comes from the small, everyday choices.

When we isolate, we give our inner critic free rein. Those little voices telling us we’re not enough, we don’t belong, or no one will notice if we stay home get louder when we’re alone.

But when we show up, we get proof that those voices are lying. We see people light up when we walk in. We hear “I’m so glad you came.” We laugh until our cheeks hurt. And suddenly we remember: oh right, I belong. I’m part of something bigger than myself.

Confidence builds in those moments. Not because we did something huge, but because we kept a promise to ourselves, chose connection, and realized we’re not alone.

Community Is the Mirror

One of my favorite things about gathering with women is how quickly we reflect each other’s worth back. Someone shares a win she downplayed in her own mind, and the group cheers like it’s the best news of the year. Someone admits a struggle she thought was “too heavy,” and instead of judgment, she’s met with nods and encouragement.

That’s what happens in community. We see ourselves more clearly because others mirror our value back to us. Alone, it’s easy to forget. Together, it’s harder to miss.

That night with my friends wasn’t just “hanging out.” It was a reminder that connection is fuel. It’s joy. And honestly, it’s confidence.

Showing Up As Yourself

Not all connection happens when we’re comfortable. Sometimes it shows up in the exact opposite way.

A while back, I was invited to an event by the fanciest person I know. I’m not fancy. I’m a jeans and t-shirt kind of person, and that’s exactly what I wore. When I walked in, everyone else was in beautiful dresses and heels. For a split second, I thought about turning around and leaving.

It took me a minute to get in the door. My brain was busy telling me all kinds of stories: You don’t belong here. You should’ve tried harder. Everyone’s looking at you. That’s when I used my Ctrl-Alt-Delete. I stopped the noise, reset my perspective, and reminded myself that I get to show up exactly as I am.

So I did. And you know what? No one cared about my jeans. What they cared about was connection. I met incredible women that night, women I’m still friends with today.

That experience reminded me that confidence isn’t about blending in. It’s about walking in as yourself and trusting that the right people will see you for who you are.

Everyday Confidence Counts

The truth is, confidence isn’t only built on the mountain-top moments. It’s built in the daily ones.

Getting up when you’d rather stay put.

Following through when canceling would be easier.

Choosing connection even when you don’t feel like it.

Every small choice like that stacks up. It builds trust in yourself. And the more you trust yourself, the more confident you become.

That night, the win wasn’t just that I had fun. It was that I proved to myself, again, that I could follow through. That I could get past the resistance. That I could show up and be glad I did.

And at that fancy event? The win wasn’t about the outfit. It was about showing up as myself and realizing that connection has nothing to do with fitting in. It has everything to do with being real.

A Gentle Nudge

Here’s the thing. The couch will always be there. Netflix isn’t going anywhere. And events where people are dressed fancier than you will keep happening. But the chance to connect? That moment is once and done. If you don’t show up, you miss it.

So the next time you feel that tug-of-war between staying home and connecting, or between hiding and showing up as yourself, remember this. Sometimes the most confident choice isn’t the one that looks the strongest or most impressive. It’s simply the choice to show up.

Not perfect. Not polished. Just present.

And more often than not, that’s exactly what we need.

Try This

Think about one invitation you’ve recently said no to, or one gathering you’ve been on the fence about. Maybe it’s coffee with a friend, a book club, or even just saying yes to a walk with a neighbor. This week, choose to show up.

It doesn’t have to be perfect. You don’t need the “right” outfit or the “right” words. Just go. Notice how you feel when you arrive, and notice how you feel when you leave. My guess? You’ll leave lighter, more connected, and with a little more confidence than when you walked in.

Emma’s Brave Choice
Last fall, my oldest daughter Emma made a bold decision: she stepped out of her comfort zone, packed up her life and moved to Cardiff, Wales to pursue her master’s degree in art conservation.

Now, this wasn’t just a new school in a new city. It was a new country. A new culture. An ocean away from everything familiar.

And even though Emma is independent and grounded, this was still a huge leap. New language rhythms, new systems, new expectations—and no close friends or family nearby. She was stepping into the unknown, and she was doing it entirely on her own.

A Summer in Athens
This summer, she took another brave step: volunteering in Athens, Greece, working with a conservation team that is working musical instruments, old wine and liquor bottles, and paper. When she sent me photos from the lab—carefully holding pieces of history—it hit me just how far outside her comfort zone she’s gone.

Not just physically, but emotionally.

Because these choices take courage.

Feeling the Fear—And Moving Anyway
Most people would hesitate before making a move like this. They’d worry about the distance, the unknowns, the “what ifs.” And to be honest, Emma had those feelings too. She was nervous; she questioned herself, but she didn’t let those thoughts drive the decision.

She felt the fear, she heard the doubt.
And she moved forward anyway.

That’s the part of her story that sticks with me—not just as her mom, but as someone who’s walked through plenty of her own moments of uncertainty.

The Myth of Fearlessness
We often think brave people are fearless; that confidence means never hesitating or second-guessing, but that’s not how it works.

Fear shows up every time we step toward something new. It whispers, “Stay where it’s safe.”
And we have to decide: is comfort the goal, or is growth?

Emma chose growth.

And in doing so, she built something that can’t be taught in a classroom or downloaded from a podcast.

The Confidence You Earn
She built confidence.

Not the loud, look-at-me kind, the quiet kind, the kind that comes from navigating a new city, learning how to ask for help in another language, figuring out how to stay steady when everything around you is unfamiliar.

I’ve seen that same kind of confidence build in my own life, not from ease—but from action.

Climbing Kilimanjaro.
Standing on a TEDx stage.
Writing a book.
Starting a business.
Raising six kids—three adopted from different countries—while still figuring out who I was.

None of those moments felt comfortable at the start. Most of them didn’t feel comfortable halfway through either, but what they all had in common was this: I said yes before I felt fully ready.

That’s where the growth lives—that’s where confidence begins to take root.

Why I Created the REAL Method
It’s one of the reasons I created the REAL Method. Because real confidence doesn’t show up because you have all the answers. It shows up because you start moving anyway.

Respect yourself.
Embrace your failures.
Ask yourself what you want.
Live without limits.

That last part gets misunderstood sometimes.
“Live without limits” doesn’t mean you ignore your reality.
It doesn’t mean you force your way through burnout or pretend you’re fearless.

It means you stop letting fear make your choices for you, it means you stop letting other people’s expectations set the boundaries of your life.

What Stepping Out Can Look Like
It’s not just about doing something dramatic like moving across the world. Getting out of your comfort zone can look like:

Saying no to something you’ve always said yes to

Speaking up in a room where you’ve usually stayed quiet

Signing up for the class

Finally making the doctor’s appointment

Starting the business

Having the conversation you’ve been avoiding

Admitting you’re ready for something more

Growth doesn’t have a size limit.
What’s brave for you might look different than what was brave for Emma, that doesn’t make it less meaningful.

Comfort Feels Safe—But Confidence Lives Elsewhere
And let’s not pretend it’s easy. The comfort zone is appealing for a reason. It’s predictable. It’s manageable. It keeps us from the sting of rejection or failure or looking foolish.

But it also keeps us from discovering what we’re capable of.

From finding new parts of ourselves, from making an impact, from building the kind of confidence that sticks with you—not just when things are going well, but when they’re hard.

Emma inspires me because she’s living all of that right now.
She’s stretching herself in ways that will change her life forever—not because everything is perfect, but because she’s willing to show up anyway.

You Don’t Have to Wait to Feel Ready
And the truth is—we all have the ability to do the same.
We don’t have to wait for permission or perfect timing; we don’t even have to wait until we feel confident.

Confidence isn’t a prerequisite.
It’s a result.

So maybe you’re standing at the edge of something right now; maybe there’s a move you’re considering—literal or emotional.
Maybe you’ve been feeling that inner pull toward something new, something a little scary, something uncertain.

Take the Next Brave Step
What would it look like to just take one step?

Not the whole leap. Just the next small, honest, imperfect step.

I’ll tell you what I’ve learned from watching Emma—and from living it myself:

That one step?
That’s where confidence starts.

Have you ever had one of those days when your mental health is plummeting and everything feels overwhelming?

You know, the kind where stress piles up at work, traffic is terrible, and all you want to do is climb into bed and pull the covers over your head?

Who is it that you reach out to in those moments?

Most likely, you turn to someone who truly knows you—someone who listens, understands, and cares deeply.

That’s what real friendship looks like, and that’s exactly why it’s so crucial for your mental health.

When it comes to mental health, a lot of us immediately think about therapy, mindfulness, meditation, or even medication.

Those things matter.

But one thing we sometimes overlook is the incredible value of having meaningful, supportive friendships.

Good friends are more than just company for weekend plans or celebrations.

They are a lifeline during hard times, a buffer against loneliness, and an anchor when things feel shaky.

Friendship Is a Safe Place to Land

Have you noticed that when you’re with a real friend, you don’t have to pretend?

There’s something so freeing about just being yourself without worrying how they’ll judge you.

You can talk openly about your struggles, your fears, your dreams, and even your mistakes, without a mask.

This safe space is powerful for your mental health because it helps you process your emotions without bottling them up.

When you’re stressed at work or struggling with motherhood, calling up a friend to vent, cry, or even laugh can instantly ease your anxiety and make your stress feel lighter.

It’s incredible how much better you can feel after simply sharing your burden with someone who cares.

Good Friends Help You Handle Stress

Let’s face it—life is stressful.

And stress isn’t just annoying; it takes a toll on your mental health.

But have you ever noticed how spending time with friends can ease your stress?

Whether you’re talking about something deep or just laughing at silly jokes, your friends help you let go of your tension, even if it’s just for a little while.

Science actually backs this up: when you’re around good friends, your body releases chemicals that help you relax, which decreases stress hormones.

It’s no wonder you feel so much better after hanging out, grabbing coffee, or even just chatting on the phone.

Real Friends Bring Fresh Perspectives

Ever been stuck in your own head, replaying negative thoughts or worrying endlessly about something?

A trusted friend can gently pull you out of that loop by offering a fresh point of view.

Sometimes all it takes is hearing someone else say, “Hey, I think you’re being too hard on yourself,” or, “Remember when you handled that big project last month? You can do this, too.”

Friends often see strengths in you that you can’t see in yourself.

They remind you of past successes or highlight things you’re great at.

Their encouragement helps you gain perspective, build your self-confidence, and feel stronger mentally and emotionally.

Healthy Habits Spread Through Friendships

We often underestimate the positive impact our friends have on our daily habits.

Have you ever noticed you’re more likely to eat well, exercise, or get enough sleep when you have a friend who’s also into those healthy habits?

Friends subtly influence our behavior, nudging us to take better care of ourselves without even realizing it.

Maybe your friend invites you to join a fitness class or suggests taking a walk instead of lounging on the couch.

Those small nudges help you adopt healthier patterns.

The beauty of it is that healthy habits not only help your physical body, but they also significantly boost your mental health.

Friends Help Fight Loneliness

We’ve all experienced loneliness.

Even if you’re surrounded by people, you can sometimes feel isolated or misunderstood.

Genuine friendships combat loneliness by reminding you that you’re connected to someone who cares deeply about you.

A quick text or phone call from a friend can totally shift your day.

It lets you know that someone sees you, thinks about you, and wants to check in.

That kind of connection is deeply comforting.

It eases loneliness and protects your mental health from feelings of isolation or sadness.

How to Take Care of Your Friendships (and Yourself!)

Friendships are like gardens—they grow best when cared for.

Just as your friends nurture your mental health, it’s important to nurture your friendships, too.

How do you do that?

It’s simple—make time for your friends, even when life gets busy.

Check in regularly, even if it’s just a quick text or a short call.

Those small interactions make a big difference.

Also, remember to be open and honest about your feelings.

Real friendships thrive on vulnerability and honesty.

When you share your struggles, your friends feel comfortable sharing theirs, too. That mutual openness strengthens your bond.

And always be grateful.

Let your friends know that you appreciate them.

Thank them for being there, for listening, or just for being themselves.

Gratitude strengthens friendships, making them deeper and more meaningful.

It’s Okay to Let Some Friendships Go

Finally, let’s talk about the uncomfortable side of friendships.

Sometimes, friendships can become unhealthy.

If a friendship makes you feel bad about yourself, anxious, or drained, you might need to step back.

Setting boundaries or even ending friendships is difficult, but protecting your mental health is always worth it.

Not all friendships last forever, and that’s okay.

People change, and life takes us in different directions.

What matters most is prioritizing relationships that lift you up, support you, and nourish your mental well-being.

Your Mental Health Deserves Good Friendships

At the end of the day, friendships aren’t just about having someone to hang out with.

They’re about connection, support, and understanding.

They’re about knowing you’re not alone in life’s challenges.

Real friends stand by you, cheer you on, and help you navigate through life’s ups and downs.

When it comes to your mental health, nurturing friendships should be a top priority.

Reach out, connect, and stay engaged with those who truly care.

Build friendships that make you feel valued, supported, and understood.

In return, remember to be the kind of friend who offers the same care and compassion.

Friendships protect your mental health by creating a safe place, reducing stress, and reminding you of your worth.

They’re one of the most powerful tools you have for building and maintaining a healthy, happy life.

So, don’t underestimate the power of genuine friendships.

Cherish them, invest in them, and always remember—your mental health thrives when surrounded by people who truly care.

As a mother, one of my favorite sounds is children’s laughter.

There’s just something about it that makes my heart laugh with them.

When you hear someone laugh joyfully, there is something from deep inside that makes you want to join them.

Laughter Lifts Heavy Hearts.

In a world filled with stress and uncertainty, laughter has the remarkable ability to uplift our spirits.

There are so many challenges in our world today.

If we become too seriously focused on all the negativity, it can be incredibly damaging to our health and our relationships.

This is where laughter comes in.

It allows us to forge deeper connections and creates wonderful moments of joy in our lives.

From sharing a funny story with friends to watching a comedy show with loved ones, humor has the power to overcome barriers and dissolve tensions.

The thing I love about humor is that it reminds us of the shared humanity that binds us all together.

Humor as a Universal Language

No matter where we come from or what language we speak, humor has a universal appeal.

I can travel anywhere in the world and hear the sound of laughter.

It transcends cultural boundaries no matter where I go.

Even if I don’t know the language, I can share a laugh with someone else, and communication magically happens.

In addition to this, a witty one-liner, a clever pun, or a hilarious meme all have the power to bring people together.

When we allow ourselves those humorous moments, it can create bonds of solidarity no matter what the situation is.

Especially in times of hardship and adversity, humor can serve as a beacon of hope, offering moments of relief from life’s challenges.

The Healing Power of Laughter

Laughter isn’t just good for the soul—it’s also good for the body and mind.

Scientific research has shown that laughter triggers the release of endorphins.

These are the body’s natural feel-good chemicals.

By releasing endorphins, laughter can reduce stress, boost your mood, and promote overall well-being.

There are also physiological benefits that come with laughter.

It can improve circulation, boost immune function, and relieve tension in the muscles.

So, in other words, by incorporating humor into our daily lives, we can enhance our physical and mental health.

This alone should be motivation to make laughter a part of our lives.

Through it, we can also foster a greater sense of joy and connection with others.

Connecting Through Shared Laughter

One of the most beautiful aspects of humor is its ability to create moments of connection.

Whether it’s sharing a joke with coworkers during a break or laughing at a funny movie with family members, laughter strengthens bonds.

It can also foster a sense of belonging and community.

When we laugh together, we create shared memories and experiences that deepen our relationships and create lasting connections.

One of my favorite things to do is spend time with my family and laugh at all the crazy things that happen to us.

We have so many humorous stories that there is never a shortage of laughter when we’re together.

And even though my children are now teenagers and adults, I still love the sound of their laughter.

Finding Joy in Everyday Moments

Humor isn’t just reserved for special occasions or comedic performances. It can be found in the everyday moments of life.

I find a great deal of humor in the absurdities that happen throughout my day.

My kids find humor in sharing lighthearted banter with friends and loved ones.

There are countless opportunities to infuse our lives with laughter and joy.

The more you look for those opportunities, the more you will find them.

And the more you find them, the better you will be able to cultivate a sense of humor and embrace the playful side of life.

With laughter, we can find moments of joy even in the most mundane and challenging circumstances.

Using Humor to Navigate Challenges

In times of difficulty and adversity, humor can be a powerful coping mechanism.

Laughter can help us navigate life’s challenges with grace and resilience.

By reframing difficult situations through the lens of humor, we can gain perspective and lighten the mood.

We can also find creative solutions to our problems.

Did you know that humor even has the ability to defuse tension?

We can diffuse conflicts and bring people together simply by finding those moments where we can laugh together.

Laughter helps us to stop taking ourselves and the world so seriously.

Embracing Laughter as a Form of Self-Care

In our fast-paced and often stressful lives, it’s easy to overlook the importance of laughter and playfulness.

However, taking time to embrace laughter as a form of self-care is essential for maintaining balance and perspective.

Whether it’s reading a funny book or watching a humorous video on social media, laughter can relieve the stress and heaviness of life.

For me, simply sharing a good laugh with friends has the power to rejuvenate my spirit and nourish my soul.

By prioritizing moments of humor and joy in our lives, we can cultivate a sense of well-being.

Laughter can also provide us with resilience that will carry us through life’s ups and downs.

Make Laughter a Part of Your Daily Life.

If you haven’t recognized it by now, I truly believe that laughter is a precious gift.

It has the power to bring joy, connection, and healing into our lives.

In today’s world, we need moments of pure joy where we can let go of the stresses of the world around us.

The more we are able to find the funny things in life, the better our lives will be.

So, my invitation to you today is to find a way to incorporate laughter into your daily life.

You can start by thinking about the absurdities of your own life and learn to laugh with yourself.

I’m not talking about laughing and making fun of yourself or others. Laughter should never be at the expense of someone’s feelings or self-esteem.

The laughter I’m talking about is the kind that lifts you up and bolsters those around you, bringing joy to everyone.

By embracing this kind of humor as a universal language, we can harness the power of laughter to enrich our lives and uplift the spirits of those around us.

That kind of laughter really is the best kind of medicine for whatever it is that ails you.
